Mangroves. Carbon. A living register.

The idea · a working register

Mangroves store carbon, proving it is the work

Kenya’s mangrove coast holds 64,426.9 ha of mapped mangroves. Each hectare is a carbon store, a storm buffer and a feeding ground. [1]

A mangrove carbon register lists each site and its stock, so conservation can be verified, not estimated from memory.

Blue carbon = carbon captured by coastal ecosystems: mangroves, seagrass and saltmarsh.

Units used throughout: ha area · tCO₂e/yr annual carbon rate · km² site area.

Chapter 1 · Vanga Bay

Vanga Bay: a mangrove belt on record since 1967

The 1967 Lamu survey recorded 46,184 ha of mangroves, of which 34,680 ha remained. [2]

The Vanga restoration corridor shows how persistent community planting can rebuild a mangrove belt.

The Vanga restoration proposal covers 460→800 ha, with modelled carbon storage of 5,500→8,700 tCO₂e/yr. [2]

Chapter 2 · Mikoko Pamoja, Gazi

A community-verified blue-carbon register

The Mikoko Pamoja project protects 117.4 ha of mangroves and produces verified blue-carbon reductions. [3]

Restored mangroves here store over 1,500 t C/ha in deep, organic-rich sediment.

Gazi is proof that a community can own and sell verified blue carbon: 2,466 tCO₂e of verified reductions and 2,074 Plan Vivo Certificates in 2024, a cumulative total of more than 22,000 tCO₂e, and a plan for at least 3,000 tCO₂e/yr from 2013-2033.

Chapter 3 · Watamu Bay

A lagoon that feeds the reef

National wetland reporting records 1,600 ha of mangroves lost and 23,000 ha degraded along this coast. [5]

Tana and Lamu account for 66% of that loss.

Watamu Marine Park covers 10 km² and is a no-take zone; the surrounding Marine Reserve, including Mida Creek, covers 32 km².

Chapter 4 · Kiunga / Kilifi: the policy year

Nov 2025: Kenya’s Kiunga plan

The Kiunga plan (November 2025) sets a community-based forest governance area of 64,500 ha, with a first-phase priority area of 10,766 ha. [4]

6 community forest associations are verified: the reserve was legally designated in 2004, and the community conservancy was established in 2015.

2025 NDC: Kenya’s national climate commitment.

Kenya on the world’s blue-carbon map

These sites, data and CFA arrangements are the register. The next step is making them count: for conservation finance, for the NDC, and for the coast itself.

The map is yours to explore: pick a site from the top-left menu, open a protected-area record, or ask a question - in English, French or Kiswahili - and the answer comes only from the data on this page.

Epilogue · The 11 protected areas on this coast

11 mapped marine protected areas

By designation: Marine National Park ×4, Marine National Reserve ×6, Community Nature Reserve ×1.

Every card below is one official record from the RCoE protected-area database. Tap a chip to filter by type, or a card to open its full record and light it up on the map.

Hover any filter for what it means. IUCN category is the world standard for how strictly an area is protected, from I (strictest) to VI (sustainable use).

Data authorities. RCoE (the Regional Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity, Forests and Seascapes, implemented by CIFOR-ICRAF and RCMRD and funded by the European Union) provides the mangrove, coral, seascape, coastal and marine-protected-area layers. OFESA (the East and Southern Africa Forest Observatory, implemented by CIFOR and RCMRD) provides the administrative district polygons. In the MPA records the source lists Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) as the managing authority for the marine national parks and reserves, and Community (community conservancy) for Kiunga; the records also carry identifiers from the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), UNEP-WCMC and IUCN.

Methodology

This scrollytelling story map draws its maps from the RCoE and OFESA layers listed above. Mapped extents and areas shown (e.g. “mapped area”) are the geometry as it appears in those source files and are computed by measuring that geometry; they may differ from legal, gazetted or officially reported areas. The story figures come from the sources cited beside each statement. The map does not model carbon stocks, nor does it assert legal boundaries.
